Né à la suite de la polémique qui a entaché le prix Hugo ces dernières années, ce prix lié à la convention annuelle DragonCon d'Atlanta a connu sa première fournée de nominations.
Pour rappel, les Sad Puppies et les Rabid Puppies reprochent au prix Hugo d'être de plus en plus inaccessibles pour les fans. Selon ces deux groupes, le prix est contrôlé par une élite poursuivant un but social et politique en faisant gagner des œuvres qui mettent en avant la diversité. Les Dragon Awards se veulent quant à lui plus accessibles. Les œuvres nommées sont choisies par les lecteurs. Un système qui rappelle celui du prix Hugo, avec une grande différence : dans le cas des Dragon Awards la participation est gratuite. Certaines catégories également du prix sont dédiées aux jeux et jeux vidéo. On ne sait pas si cette nouvelle initiative saura s'imposer, mais cette première liste semble relativement épargnée par les Puppies en tous genres.
Les prix seront remis le 5 septembre, à la fin de la DragonCon.
