Lucy and Edmund have been sent to Cambrdge to stay with their Aunt, Uncle and unpleasant cousin Eustace. Their mother and father have gone to America with Susan. Peter is studying for his exams.

They notice the painting of the ship. Lucy remarks that it is very Narnian, and that the water looks like its really moving. Eustace interupts and says its nonsense and says that is what happens when you only read fairytales. A large wave sweeps out of the picture and fills the room. The water sucks the three into the picture and they find themselves in the sea.

A ship comes along and they are saved from the water by the crew. To their astonishment, one of them is Capsian. He introduces them to the crew as "Edmund the Just and Lucy the Valiant, the High King and High Queen of Narnia". At that moment they are interrupted by Eustace screaming to get Reepicheep off him. Lucy and Edmund are delighted to see Reepicheep again. Tavros appears, Eustace possibly faints or just becomes weak at the sight, and they take Eustace away so he can lie down for a while.

Caspian tells them they are on a ship called the Dawn Treader. He gives Edmund and Lucy some Narnian clothes to wear, and then presents Lucy with her Dagger and Cordial and gives Edmund the flashlight he left behind on his last visit to Narnia. He tells them how before his Uncle Miraz had stolen the throne, he had sent away Seven Lords who were friends of his fathers to explore the Eastern Seas beyond the Lone Islands but were never seen again, and that thefore he and his crew are now looking for them.

Lucy goes to see Eustace and sees a Faun offering him soup. Eustace asks why his mother smells like a goat. Lucy laughs at him for being delirious. Secretly she pours a little of the cordial into the soup.

Lucy later looks over the edge of the ship and sees a water spirit. The spirit smiles and waves to Lucy before disappearing.

The ship reaches the Lone Islands which look eerily abandoned. Caspian, Lucy and Edmund make their way to the castle where they find a book with the names of villagers who have been sold as slaves. Suddenly a group of men with daggers between their teeth attack. Caspian, Lucy and Edmund try to fend them off but then they hear the cry of Eustace. Pug enters with Eustace and is holding a dagger to his throat. Capsian, Lucy and Edmund have no choice but to drop their swords. Pug orders that Eustace and Lucy be taken to the Slave Market, and that Edmund and Caspian be locked in the dungeon.

The next morning a wagon full of slaves is unloaded at the quayside. Caspian and Edmund are looking out from the prison window and apparently seem to see a ship disappear in the distance which is then swallowed by the darkness. They apparently can't believe their eyes. Their fellow prisoner tells them that the slaves were fed to the darkness. He says that he and the Lords had tried to find the origin of the darkness, but the others never returned. Caspian realises that this is Lord Bern.

Meanwhile, Lucy has been sold as a slave, and Eustace is next on the list. Two slave traders remove their hoods to reveal that it is actually Drinian with Reepicheep stood on his shoulders, and Tavros. They shout "For Narnia" and storm forward and free the slaves. The guard at the dungeon are distracted by the sound of the fighting outside, and so Caspian and Edmund use the oppurtunity to attack the guards. Other villagers come out of hiding and join the fight. Eventually the slave traders are defeated.

Lord Bern shows them a sword that Caspian's Father had given him. He presents it to Caspian and tells him that it was a gift from Aslan to protect Narnia. To Edmund's joy, Caspian gives him the sword.

The ship sets sail again, and when it reaches land the crew decide to sleep on the beach and spend the morning exploring the island. During the night, magic footprints appear in the sand and a voice says "Grab it" and lucy is carried off. Apparently they had noticed that Lucy was holding a book and realised she could therefore read.

Lucy is placed on a Lawn, she reaches for her dagger but something invisble knocks it out of her hand. The voices tell her that she should enter the house and recite the spell that makes invisible things visible. Lucy could not see the house, but then a hidden door opens with a stairway.

Lucy goes throgh the magic door. She looks around and finds the Library with the Magician's book. She notices a beauty spell and can't resist the temptation to try it. Lucy notices that her reflection in the book looks like susan and she says "i am beautful!" She rips out the page, and then the book pages magically turn, and then stops at the spell to make invisible things visible. She reads the spell and Aslan becomes visible. Lucy is delighted to see him, but Aslan says he had been there the whole time, and then Lucy feels ashamed because he saw her rip out the beauty spell page. Aslan then disappears again and then Coriakin appears.

Meanwhile the others had woken up and realised Lucy was missing. They follow the footprints in the sand untill they find Lucy's dagger. Suddenly they are surrounded by invisible creatures with "claws, tusks and teeth". When Lucys spell makes them visible again they realise they are not claws, tusks and teeth but actually Dufflepuds.

The front door opens and Coriakin and Lucy come out. Coriakin tells them that the Dufflepuds had been made invisible to protect them from the evil behind the darkness. He unrolls a magic map and points to the Dark Island where evil lurks. The next bit is a bit odd, as apparently he tells them about the Four Lords who came this way, and that they realise that the man in the water must be Restimar, but of course in the new island order they haven't reached Deathwater yet, so the book writers clearly made a mistake there. Anyway, after that Caspian decides they should set sail again.

That night, Lucy tries the spell of beauty again, and saw herself as Susan, who then steps through the magic mirror. Peter and Edmund are also there but they seemingly do not know who Lucy is or anything about Narnia. Lucy panics but then she hears Aslans voice and is back on the ship. Aslan tells Lucy that she should not try to be like anyone else.

Stormy weather forces them off course and they arrive at Goldwater. Caspian, Lucy and Edmund search for clues. They find an anchor and a rope going down into an opening. In the opening they see a beautiful grotto with emerald green water. They go down to explore. At the bottom of the water they see a golden staute of a man. Edmund uses something to reach for it and Edmund realises it too is being turned to gold just before it reaches his finger. They see a submerged plate as well, and Caspian realises he is wearing the coat of arms of Lord Restimar.

Edmund says that whoever has access to the pool would be the most powerful man in the world. Edmund and Caspian get into an argument. Lucy stops them and says this is exactly what Coriakin had warned them about.

Meanwhile, Lucy had been walking along a cliff when the ground beneath him gave way and he falls down. He finds himself surrounded by jewels. He greedily takes some, and takes an the braclet off the skeleton.

Edmund and Caspian noticed that Eustace was missing and set out to find him. They find his clothes torched and torn to shreds. They see the Skeleton and Caspian recognises it as Lord Octesian. Suddenly there is a terrible cry and they see fire coming from a valley. The Dragon then lands on the Dawn Treader. It possible implies that the ship begins to dangerously sink to one side under the weight. The crew then fire arrows at the dragon and it flies back to the island.

It possibly implies then that Edmund and Caspian had ran back to the ship and that Edmund then jumps on top of the dragon. I didn't really get that bit, but then it says that (possibly whilst flying on his back) he looks down to see that burned into the floor of one of the valleys is huge letters saying "I AM EUSTACE". They return to the beach and Edmund tells them that Eustace has been turned into a Dragon.

The next morning the ship sets out, and because there was no wind they tied DragonEustace's tail to the boat and use him to help pull the boat through the water. They then reach Ramandu's island. Caspian, Lucy and Eustace lead a team through a Dark Forest untill they find a long stone table laid out with a feast. At the table is sat three figures which are as still as statues. They are Lord Revilian, Lord Argoz and Lord Mavramorn. Then then seem to notice Lord Mavramorn breathing, and that they must be in a magic sleep. Caspian notices their swords in the middle of the table.

At that moment, a blinding flash of light bursts through the trees. Liliandil then appears to them, who was apparently the most beautiful woman Caspian had ever seen. She explains to them about the Lords, about how they reached the island half crazy and severely scarred from the tempations. She says how they had threatened each other with violence, but as violence was forbidden at Aslans table they were put into a sleep. She then says that they can only be awoken when the Dark Island is defeated. She takes them up to the top of the mountain and shows them the Dark Island in the distance. She says that soon the evil will be unstoppable and that the fate of Narnia depends on you. Liliandil then goes back up into the sky.

The crew then sail off to the Dark Island. Caspian says to Edmund that in the event they don't get through it, that he wants him to know that he has been like a brother to him. Edmund returns the sentiment and apologises for having quarreled earlier. They then hear from a rock a groan of a man, who is swinging his sword, and telling them to keep away. As they get closer they realise it is a frightened elderly man and Caspian realises it is Lord Rhoop. He tells them not to think of their worst fears or else they will come true. The crew tries not to, but its too late, and they are attacked by a huge sea serpent.

DragonEustace and the sea Serpent then battle. It isn't really clear exactly what goes on here though. It does say though that Caspian steers the ship and nails the sea serpent against the rocks.

Lucy falls to her knees and closes here eyes and prays for Aslan to send help. She hears Aslan voice, and when she opens her eyes she seen an Albatross above.

Eustace is groaning and wounded lying in the water. Suddenly there is a bright light and Aslan appears and transforms Eustace back into a boy. There is a flash and Eustace is a boy again.

It then seems to say that the crew shoot harpoons with ropes attatched into the sea seprent and use it to drag it onto the deck, and then Edmund stabs it with his sword. They then let go of the ropes and drop the Sea Serpents body into the water.

Then the darkness is lifted and the light shines down. The darkness is lifted and they see where the slaves who had been fed to the Darkness were. The Dawn Treader crew cheer and celebrate. Eustace swims from the island to the ship, and everyone is happy to see him again. Reepicheep shouts out "Eustace my Friend!" and jumps into the water. Reepicheep then realises that the water is white and gleaming and they see a sea of lillies stretching into the horizon.

Caspian, Edmund, Lucy, Eustace and Reepicheep get into a longboat and row through the sea of lillies. In the distance is a huge wave of water. They then get to the beach and they find Aslan. He tells them that his country is beyond the wall, and if they went there they could never return.

Caspian asks if his father is in Aslans Country. Aslan replies that they can only find out for themselves. He starts to walk fowards, but then stops and says how he can;t imagine his father would be proud of him if he gave up everything for which he died. Edmund and Lucy also realise they have to go home.

Reepicheep asks if he can to Aslans Country. Aslan says yes. Reepicheep says his farewells and then paddles in his coracle into the wave. He disappears in a flash of light.

Aslan assures the children he would always watch over them and says his line that in their world he has another name.

Caspian tells them that Narnia is deeply in their debt, and then the three children walk through a gap in the wave and suddnly find themselves in a puddle on the floor of the room in Cambridge.

Caspian and the crew apparenly returned to Ramandu's Island and the Three Lords awoke, and it says that Lucy and Edmund and Eustace went on to talk often of Narnia after returning home.
